About this book

The skill of carving or painting living forms underlies John Ruskin's view of good design. His five lectures connect the study of art with decoration, manufacture and architecture, asking students to consider how practical work shapes their understanding of beauty. In the preface, he argues that an architect's grasp of proportion and colour depends on these skills. The opening lecture then considers how cottages and other human structures affect the experience of mountain landscapes in Scotland and the Alps.

Architectural imagination becomes the subject of a later discussion, where Ruskin challenges the demand for a fresh style suited to engines and telegraphs. He pictures elaborate structures of glass and iron while questioning whether novelty can satisfy creative ambition. Lectures on the unity of art and the work of iron extend the collection's concerns. Readers interested in design can examine his arguments about observation, manual skill and the lasting use of established styles.
