About this book
Claude Fayette Bragdon uses the idea of a fourth dimension to question the limits of ordinary perception. His discussion begins with curved space and relativity, then asks how mathematics might change our understanding of freedom, intuition and consciousness. Familiar inventions, including the telephone, aircraft and the phonograph, provide examples of experiences that once seemed impossible. These comparisons introduce an argument for looking beyond what everyday experience can readily explain.
The chapters extend this argument into sleep, dreams, mysticism and spiritual teaching. In the discussion of dreams, Bragdon links altered experiences of time with his hypothesis of higher space, drawing on Eastern accounts of waking, dreaming and deep sleep. The result is a philosophical treatment of dimensional ideas that moves between mathematical concepts and spiritual speculation. Readers interested in the meeting of geometry and metaphysics can follow how Bragdon builds connections among scientific reasoning, personal experience and beliefs about the inner life.
