About this book

Addressing the English Parliament, John Milton argues that requiring official approval before printing harms both learning and public life. His prose appeal treats books as carriers of active thought, capable of preserving a writer's reasoning beyond a single lifetime. He asks lawmakers to reconsider their printing order while maintaining that honest criticism can express loyalty to a government.

The argument moves between public principles and the practical difficulties of writing. Milton describes an author gathering evidence, consulting friends and refining ideas, only to depend on a hurried examiner's permission. Even a useful addition during printing can create delays or leave a book poorer than its writer intended. Classical examples and religious language give the appeal its historical texture.
