About this book
The title brings together L'Allegro, Il Penseroso, Comus and Lycidas by John Milton. L'Allegro sends loathed Melancholy away and calls on a goddess named in heaven Euphrosyne and by men heart-easing Mirth. The lines picture a cottage chimney that smokes from betwixt two aged oaks, where Corydon and Thyrsis are at their savoury dinner of herbs and other country messes, which the neat-handed Phyllis dresses.
Eld. Bro. hears some far-off hallo break the silent air, and SEC. BRO. says "Heaven keep my sister!" Sage Hippotades brings the answer that not a blast was from his dungeon strayed and the air was calm, and a fatal and perfidious bark, built in the eclipse and rigged with curses dark, is named as what sunk so low that sacred head.
