About this book
Poemata is a collection described as Latin, Greek and Italian Poems by John Milton, translated by William Cowper. The contents list names, among others, Elegy I, To Charles Diodati, Elegy II, On the Death of the University Beadle at Cambridge, and a piece called To Leonora, Singing in Rome. One poem describes a bee that, with subtlest skill endued, toils to earn her precious juice from all the flowery myriads strewed o'er meadow and parterre profuse.
A poem headed On the Death of the Bishop of Ely, Anno Aetates 17, says the speaker's lids were still tumid with grief and the cheek wet with briny dews shed for venerable Winton dead. An appendix piece headed On Salmasius's Hundreda asks who taught Salmasius, the French chatt'ring Pye, to try at English.
