About this book

Art Principles with Special Reference to Painting is a book by Ernest Govett, with thirty-one illustrations and notes on the illusions produced by the painter. In the preface the author says his original idea was a work covering all the principles of painting, and speaks of many years spent considering recorded theories on aesthetic problems.

One passage compares the Grecian development and the Italian Renaissance, and argues about what brought on the rise of Greek art, naming Marathon, Platæa and Salamis. Another turns to landscape painting and says that trees, bushes, rivulets and buildings should be painted fully to the middle distance. The book includes an index of artists with page numbers, Poynter, Praxiteles and Prudhon among them.
