About this book

Nietzsche and Art presents a course of lectures in which the author sets out Nietzsche's general doctrine of art and applies its leading principles to a branch of art. The preface identifies the lectures as having been delivered in a condensed and summarized form at University College, London, during November and December, 1910. The lecturer warns that the audience may hear heresies that will try its patience and asks for patience until the argument has been heard.

The discussion argues that an artist determining beauty or ugliness must have an intimate relation to the past and possible future of the people. The account of legislation says a great legislator must discover what sacrifices a people can afford and what can be discarded for a particular mode of life.
