About this book
Ten-year-old Arthur Hamilton faces a painful move when his mother's debts make it necessary to find other homes for some of her children. Mr. Martin offers him clothing, schooling and a place in his household until he turns twenty-one. Arthur tries to follow his mother's advice to be brave, but leaving the family cottage brings tears. Rover, the spotted dog who performs tricks with the boys, follows the wagon carrying Arthur away.
Written for a Sabbath school society, this children's story makes Christian duty part of ordinary family life. Arthur's friendship with Theodore brings a small test of kindness when they discover a squirrel's store of nuts. A later reunion with Rover shows how much comfort affection can offer a homesick child. Readers interested in early children's fiction will find a story that connects poverty, schooling and care for animals with lessons about generosity and responsibility.
