About this book

Artistic Anatomy of Animals is by Édouard Cuyer. The preface explains that the book comes from teaching plastic anatomy at the École des Beaux-Arts, where lessons on the anatomy of those animals which artists might be called on to represent complement the study of human anatomy. Chapter I, on osteology and arthrology, starts the study of the skeleton with a description of the trunk.

The text notes that the number of the vertebræ is not the same in all mammalia. The book describes a vast cutaneous muscle found immediately beneath the skin which covers the neck, shoulders, and trunk, a thin muscle whose function is to move the skin which strongly adheres to it. Passages on proportion show a horse of which the length contains more than two and a half times that of the head, and say that the proportion chosen in preference by authors is not exactly that which is oftenest met with.
