About this book
Artistic Embroidery, by Ella Rodman Church, contains practical instructions in the ornamental branches of needlework, with nearly two hundred illustrations and explanatory diagrams. The text calls Appliqué, as it is usually called, the most simple kind of decorative needlework, nothing more than a pattern cut out of one material and transferred on another. The text says cloth and commoner materials do not require this backing, as it is called, but may be cut after the pattern is traced and pasted directly on the groundwork. The text says a monogram is worked with gold thread, and the leaves and flowers may be done with silk if preferred.
The contents list names chapters on, among others, Designing and Transferring Designs, Articles in Silk Embroidery and Silk Embroidery with Gold. The text says the Moors of Spain have been especially celebrated for their rich and beautiful decorative work, and that with them originated the custom of using tapestry for curtains.
