The text describes the book as the Third Part of the Bridgewater Treatises on the Power, Wisdom, and Goodness of God, as manifested in the Creation. The text says it will adduce cases where there is an apparent relation between the course of operation of the elements and the course of vital functions. The text speaks of creatures constructed on a certain plan, or a certain scale, and says this plan or scale is exactly the single one which is suited to their place on the earth.
The text raises the objection that the effect of the medium must ultimately affect the duration of the earth's revolution round the sun. The text says that millions, and probably millions of millions, of years express inadequately the distance of time at which a certain cause would produce a serious effect. The text says that, except for persons whose minds have been biassed by some peculiar habit or course of thought, none are likely to run into the confusion and perplexity produced by assimilating too closely the government and direction of voluntary agents to the production of trains of mechanical and physical phenomena.
