About this book
Novum Organon Renovatum is by William Whewell, and its title page calls it the second part of the Philosophy of the Inductive Sciences, in the third edition, with large additions. The text says we owe to Bacon the broad announcement of this grand and fertile principle, and the development of the idea that the whole of natural philosophy consists entirely of a series of inductive generalizations. The text says that in every inference by Induction there is some Conception superinduced upon the Facts.
The text gives an example: from knowing that Mercury, Venus, Mars, describe ellipses about the Sun, we infer that all Planets describe ellipses about the Sun. The text says we estimate wrongly both the nature and the dignity of that kind of science with which we are here concerned, if we expect that every new advance in theory will forthwith have a market value. The text says Kepler detected with great acuteness the Numerical Laws of the solar system, though he laboured in vain to conceive the very simplest of the Laws of Motion by which the paths of the planets are governed.
