About this book
Astronomy with an Opera-glass is a popular introduction to the study of the starry heavens with the simplest of optical instruments, by Garrett Putman Serviss. The title page promises maps and directions to facilitate the recognition of the constellations and the principal stars. The text says Galileo made his famous discoveries with what was, in principle of construction, simply an opera-glass.
The text advises that the diameter of the object-glasses be not less than an inch and a half, and that a glass showing a colored fringe around a bright object be rejected. The text says a new star suddenly shone out in 1885 and, after flickering and fading for a few months, disappeared. The text says light tells of the existence of suns and systems so remote that the mind shrinks from the attempt to conceive their distance.
