About this book
At the Mercy of Tiberius is called A Novel and is credited to Augusta J. Evans. In Chapter I, a thin, hysterically unsteady voice says, 'You are obstinate and ungrateful. You would rather see me suffer and die, than bend your stubborn pride in the effort to obtain relief for me.' A speaker who calls herself a sorrowful, anxious, poverty-stricken woman says she is nothing to the man she addresses, sir, but the bearer of a letter from his dying daughter.
The text says that after the long limbo of twenty-three years, a name burst from a man, and with what a host of memories its echo peopled the room. A speaker says of Miss Brentano that she supported her mother and herself by her pencil, and calls her one of the purest, noblest and most admirable characters ever met. A question asks whether an acquaintance with the family suggests any third party who would be interested in Gen'l Darrington's will, or become a beneficiary by its destruction. A speaker says, 'I am afraid you will find cherry too dark,' and thinks a lighter wood would be better adapted to the exceeding delicacy of the design.
