About this book

A geologist returns from Antarctica determined to stop another scientific expedition from entering its unexplored interior. To explain his warning, he recounts the Miskatonic University party's search for rock samples and fossils, equipped with specially designed drills, aircraft and dog sledges. Their practical preparations give the account the texture of a field report, while strange winds and immense mountains make the landscape increasingly unsettling.

At Lake's damaged camp, the narrator and Danforth confront evidence that ordinary explanations cannot readily account for. Missing supplies, disturbed specimens and puzzling tracks turn a scientific investigation into a fearful attempt to understand what happened. Lovecraft builds this horror tale around the strain between careful observation and experiences that challenge the observer's confidence. Its combination of polar exploration, technical detail and uncertain knowledge gives the growing danger a particular force.
