About this book
The narrator proposes to explain a fear of drafts, shivering on entering cold rooms, and nausea at the evening chill of a mild autumn day. The narrator locates an encounter with horror in a commonplace rooming-house amid afternoon light and metropolitan noise, with a landlady and two men at his side. The narrator searches among cheap boarding establishments for a room combining decent cleanliness, endurable furnishings, and a very reasonable price, while unable to pay substantial rent.
Doctor Muñoz makes it clear in whispers, without details, that the methods of healing had been extraordinary and involved scenes and processes unwelcome to elderly and conservative practitioners. An account of worsening health describes a more livid face, a hollow and indistinct voice, and muscular movements that become less perfectly coordinated.
