About this book

In the Colorado town of Indian Creek, biology professor Abednego Danner pursues an experiment behind the locked door of his home laboratory. His wife Matilda objects to his work, while a fellow scientist laughs at his belief that chemistry could transform muscular strength. Danner takes his inspiration from ants and grasshoppers, then produces small creatures whose astonishing power makes his laboratory a hazardous place. The opening mixes scientific speculation with sharp scenes of domestic disagreement.

Later, Hugo Danner struggles to turn his anger at injustice into a purpose in Washington. Skorvsky introduces him to an educated circle seeking political change, and announces Hugo's pledge to free two prisoners. Their enthusiasm leaves Hugo feeling both committed and patronized. These passages give the novel an interest beyond the laboratory: the difficulty of finding meaningful action among people eager to enlist someone in their own plans.
