About this book
At the Sign of the Eagle is by Gilbert Parker. Sir Duke Lawless asks his wife, Molly, what she thinks of a big man and a little one talking to Lord Hampstead. The answer calls the little man affected, gauche, and servile, and the big one picturesque and superior in a raw kind of way. To the question 'And what is the other person's name?' the answer is that the other person carries the contradictory name of Stephen Pride.
Mr. Vandewaters startles a woman by quoting suddenly lines from an English poet unknown to her. A woman turning over the Academy pictures of the year comes to one called 'A Japanese Beauty of Old Days'. A young man demands 'What right have you to speak to me like this?' with an attempt at dignity, and Vandewaters laughs loudly.
