About this book

The account of army training describes men rising before sunrise to exercise with rifle and bayonet while their drab black clothing gives way to khaki uniforms. The growing camp fills with men, additional lines of tents, arriving horses and motor-lorries carrying immense loads across the paddocks to stores of equipment and food. Fresh contingents are offered, accepted and sent into training, while guns rumble into the camp and are parked in neat rows pointing towards the road.

A communication trench provides the only link with strong but isolated posts beyond Fishermen's Huts, held in turn by parties of New Zealanders, Maoris and Light Horsemen. The account calls Ocean Beach impracticable by day and says Indian muleteers use the nearest portion at night only by taking a risk.
