About this book
Elements of Trench Warfare is by Captain William H. Waldron, 29th U. S. Infantry. The text gives lengths to be laid off for a trench, including 1 foot for the width of berms and the height of parapet, and 1 foot 4 inches for the width of firing banquet and the width of bottom of trench, among others. The text says great care should be taken to make the dimensions of the trench as accurate as possible, and that the squad leader is held responsible for this.
For night work, the text says the trace should be staked out before complete darkness sets in, and it allows no smoking, with such conversation as is necessary made in whispers. The text names the machine gun as the weapon which inflicts the greatest losses on the assaulting infantry, appearing suddenly out of the ground and laying low whole units. The text on fascines says binding will be done with a double turn of wire or tarred rope, in twelve places 18 inches apart.
