About this book
James Slough Zerbe’s Automobiles has a chapter headed The Frame, and Its Accessories, which says that under this title should be included the frame, axles, springs, wheels, steering gear and brakes. The text calls the frame a substructure for the body, which must be rigid enough to prevent any destructive strains from reaching the body. The text says the inner tube is usually of thin elastic rubber, so made that when properly inflated it will fit the outer tube or casing. The text says that putting on and taking off double tubes properly with clincher tires is quite an art, and that a pair of blunt, round-ended levers is best for the purpose.
The text describes an induction coil with a core of soft iron, and at one end an armature, mounted on the end of a spring finger. The contents give a chapter on Automobile Accessories listing, among others, Self Starting, Lighting, Car Signals and Mufflers. The contents give another chapter, Running an Automobile, listing, among others, Running Close to the Curb and The Middle of the Road.
