About this book
An inexperienced Massachusetts regiment, a mistaken report of an enemy camp and too few boats shape Charles Lawrence Peirson's account of the fighting at Ball's Bluff in 1861. Writing as a participant, the regiment's adjutant follows the movement across the Potomac and explains how transport failures left Union troops in a difficult position. His judgments of commanders and military discipline give the narrative a personal, argumentative voice.
The account continues into captivity at Libby Prison, where scant meals, cramped quarters and the slow passage of time become daily concerns. Songs, storytelling and small acts of cooperation offer relief, while attempted escapes bring fresh difficulties. Written for the Military Historical Society of Massachusetts, this short memoir connects the practical problems of an early Civil War battle with the routines and friendships of prison life.
