About this book

Barotseland: Eight Years among the Barotse is credited to D. E. C. Stirke. Riddles in the text include a house that has no door, answered by an egg, and what runs quicker than a train, answered by the heart. A chapter on Barozi songs and dances describes the Liimba as a purely Barozi song, sung and danced by women only, to celebrate the arrival of a Chief. The Liwale is described as a purely Barozi dance, danced when the new moon appears, by women only, with drums and silimba.

The text on language says Sikololo has gradually displaced and superseded the Sechuana or Sesuto language of the original Bechwana invaders of a hundred years ago. The text says all cattle herding and milking of cattle is done by men only, and that the Barozi cannot give any reason for the custom except that it has always been men's work.
