About this book
The Treaty of Waitangi, by Thomas Lindsay Buick, concerns how New Zealand became a British colony. Mr. Busby's address describes his mission as maintaining friendly feeling, preventing misunderstandings and quarrels as much as possible, and giving greater assurance of safety and just dealing in commercial transactions. The account describes visitors finding at Akaroa a native pa with a remnant of the Ngai-Tahu people, broken by Te Rauparaha's last raid, as well as a whaling station and a cattle run established by Captain Lethart.
The account records obtaining the signature of Iwikau, identified as a brother of Tamiaharanui, and that of John Love. The text asks why the Government established a military post on Native lands if the Government really considered Kawhia a Native district.
