About this book
Baudelaire: His Prose and Poetry is edited by T. R. Smith. The contents list a poem by A. C. Swinburne, a study of Charles Baudelaire by F. P. Sturm, and poems in prose translated by Arthur Symons, among them The Favours of the Moon and Which is True?
The text says the collection of his verse and prose is gathered from those experiments in translation which the writer thinks will most effectively convey to the English reader those qualities that made Baudelaire what he is. One prose piece has the speaker, rising with the satisfaction of a philosopher of the Porch, say to a man, Sir, you are my equal! Kindly do me the honor of sharing my purse. A piece headed Good Dogs to Mr. Joseph Stevens has the speaker say that he has never, even before the young writers of his century, been ashamed of his admiration for Buffon, and that he much more willingly calls to Sterne.
