About this book

A poet faces his mother's anger and the hostility of those around him in the opening verses of Charles Baudelaire's collection. His answer turns suffering into a claim for spiritual dignity. The English verse translation by Cyril Scott carries that struggle into poems about artistic work, beauty, solitude and the passing of time. Classical figures and Christian imagery appear beside troubled voices whose surroundings seem to reflect their inward lives.

Scent, colour and sound answer one another in the poem titled Echoes, while Man and the Sea makes the ocean a mirror of the human spirit. Elsewhere, richly furnished rooms and quiet harbours offer imagined peace, but approaching winter brings anxiety and memories of lost warmth. Readers interested in how poetry connects physical sensations with emotional states will find these short pieces moving between desire, weariness and consolation.

About the author

Charles Baudelaire

Charles Baudelaire expanded the possibilities of French lyric and prose poetry through sharply observed writing on modern Paris, beauty and alienation. His prose poems, published posthumously as Le Spleen de Paris, appear in Poems in Prose through Arthur Symons’s English translation. J. C.
