About this book
Beautiful Joe: An Autobiography is by Marshall Saunders, and its preface says Beautiful Joe is a real dog, and Beautiful Joe is his real name. The preface says that the dog belonged during the first part of his life to a cruel master, who mutilated him in the manner described in the story, and was rescued and now lives in a happy home with pleasant surroundings.
In one scene the narrator sits by his mother, a little, gaunt, scarred creature who one day licked him gently, wagged her tail, and died, and feels lonely and miserable. A child tells Cousin Eleanor about Topsy, Graham's pony, who would run away but, after he took her out a piece of bread every day and petted her, is now very gentle and never runs away. The child also says that Tiger, a big dog, used to bite at Dr. Fairchild, who spoke kindly to him and threw out bits of meat, and that Tiger now follows behind and wags his tail.
