About this book
Carl Lotus Becker, named on the title page as Professor of European History at the University of Kansas, wrote this history of the colonies. The editor's introduction says the volumes of the series it belongs to present a brief account of the beginnings, development and final unity of the people of the United States.
One passage describes the trade routes that carried silks, spices and precious stones from India and China to Levant cities such as Antioch, Jaffa and Alexandria, and the Italian cities, among them Venice and Genoa, that grew rich on that carrying trade. Another, on English politics after the Revolution, says colonial policy passed to ministers and Parliament, and mentions the Board of Trade's protest in 1715 when George Vaughan, an owner of sawmills in New Hampshire, was appointed lieutenant-governor. The index lists Champlain, the Charter of Connecticut and Christmas festivals in Massachusetts.
