About this book
The discussion of animal signs distinguishes one or two purely heraldic examples from others associated with nature and apparently unconnected with heraldry. A stone carving depicts an ape seated on its haunches and eating an apple, with initials and a date upon it. A water-colour drawing acquired by the Guildhall Museum depicts a figure from a house in Eastcheap, supposed to represent Falstaff.
The account of entertainment at Sadler’s Wells describes an immense tank beneath and beyond the stage, which could be filled from the New River and emptied at pleasure. The explanation of the Three Kings sign connects its suitability for inns with the kings being considered patron saints of travellers because of their journey.
