About this book
Cecil Hallett gives a short history of Ripon Cathedral and a description of its fabric, with fifty-three illustrations. The preface credits Canon J. T. Fowler's editions of the original authorities for the Surtees Society, including Memorials of Ripon and The Ripon Chapter Acts. The history covers the dedication in honour of St. Peter in the presence of Ecgfrith, King of Northumbria, where Wilfrid gave a copy of the Gospels written in gold on purple vellum, and the division of the diocese by Archbishop Theodore in 678.
On the building itself, one passage says the present oak vault is by Sir Gilbert Scott, copied from the transepts of York Minster, with 107 carved bosses where the ribs cross, and that the pulpit is Jacobean. Another passage describes a hospital that received lepers and blind priests born within the Liberty of Ripon, with a dole of food to the poor on St. Mary Magdalene's day.
