About this book
Philip Walsingham Sergeant's illustrated guide to Winchester Cathedral gives the history of the church and a description of its parts. A passage on early origins cites writers including Rudborne for a great church rebuilt at Caergwent by Lucius, dedicated in November 169, and gives the dimensions in passus that Willis quotes without reconciling the figures.
Among the tombs, a black marble slab on a chapel floor marks Isaak Walton, with Bishop Ken's inscription quoted. Other passages mention Prior Silkstede's chapel, the Venerable chapel, which serves as a vestry for the minor canons, and Bishop Wilberforce's tomb in the south transept. Another passage describes the remains of Hyde Abbey, which lie north of the cathedral outside the old North Gate of the city, and a picture is captioned St. Cross from the south.
