About this book
Beyond the City by Arthur Conan Doyle introduces two little old ladies who rush to the sitting-room window when a domestic announces that new occupants are moving in. The account of the neighborhood describes a broad road driven through a quiet domain, a new name for the quarter, and three villas rising opposite. The Williams sisters feel reassured by news that Admiral Hay Denver, Mrs. Hay Denver, and their only son are about to move into a villa.
Clara tells her astonished father that she is trying to smoke, finds smoking difficult through lack of practice, and is following Mrs. Westmacott's recommendation. Ida offers her father a cigarette and reports Mrs. Westmacott's view that there should be one law for all.
