About this book

Golf gave Wodehouse a subject he adored, and this 1922 collection of ten linked stories makes the sport the stage for romance, rivalry, and gentle absurdity. Most are told by the Oldest Member, an unhurried club sage who buttonholes younger players and spins cautionary tales while they long to escape to the first tee. A poetry-loving young woman scorns a devoted golfer until his sudden triumph wins her over. Handicaps rise and fall alongside engagements. Wodehouse pokes fun at literary snobs, weekend duffers, and men whose whole happiness rides on a short putt, yet his affection for the game and its victims never wavers.
