About this book
Birds of the Rockies by Leander S. Keyser, published in 1902, has eight full-page plates, four of them in color, by Louis Agassiz Fuertes, along with drawings in the text by Bruce Horsfall and eight views from photographs. The first plate shows Williamson's Sapsucker. A complete check-list of Colorado birds is included.
The author compares eastern and western birds and wonders how an eastern blue jay would manage on top of Pike's Peak, setting his own home at eight hundred and eighty feet above sea-level against Denver at six thousand one hundred and sixty. On a mountain climb his boy comrade goes ahead with a butterfly-net, while a spurred towhee calls from a bushy clump and a rock wren sings on a stony ridge. The check-list gives each species a number, a scientific name and a note such as common winter resident or abundant summer resident, with entries for the snowflake, the Alaskan longspur and the western vesper sparrow.
