About this book
Bird Watching is a book by Edmund Selous. The contents list chapters on watching great plovers, ringed plovers and redshanks, gulls and skuas, and shags and guillemots, among others. The writer describes a vocal accompaniment in which the wailing note went up, and was caught and repeated from one part to another at greater or lesser intervals.
The writer first thought that these dances arose out of the excitement of the chase, that they were hunting-dances in fact, but soon discovered the error. The writer says young shags are at first black and also blind, as he was able to detect through the glasses, and that afterwards the body becomes covered with a dusky grey down. A passage speaks of the approaching extinction of this or that more or less lovely or interesting creature, and says every effort should be exhausted, every nerve strained, to avert such end.
