About this book
Betty Danford has gambled beyond her means and pawned the diamond necklace her husband gave her as a wedding present. To hide the loss, she has replaced it with an imitation. Her next idea brings Detective Harry Milholland, a former suitor, into an awkward bargain: she wants him to arrange a theft that will make her deception disappear. He sees the risks, but Betty counts on his affection to overcome his objections.
Lemuel De Bra builds this short crime story around a marriage, a secret compartment and a plan whose timing soon becomes a source of alarm. Betty's efforts to get Chester out of the house turn an ordinary evening into a scramble, while their conversation suggests that he has news of his own. Quick dialogue and shifting information give the story its pace. Readers interested in brief detective fiction can follow how one concealed mistake creates pressure for another.
