About this book

On Christmas Eve in 1894, Letty Chivers faces a long night in an isolated house while a snowstorm gathers outside. Her husband, Ned, must ride to Fairbanks on urgent business, leaving the wages for his firm's workers at home. Letty persuades him to help her hide the bank notes and fill their familiar money bag with old receipts. When a sound comes at the kitchen door, her careful preparations begin to feel less reassuring.

Anna Katharine Green builds this short crime story around a household's ordinary rooms, locked doors and uncertain sounds. A threatening visitor forces Letty to think quickly, using conversation and the offer of a meal to gain time. Her fear, loneliness and efforts to protect the money give the suspense a personal weight. Readers interested in disguise and domestic mysteries will find a compact story in which small gestures and practical decisions matter.
