About this book

An unfamiliar woman in gray walks out of a bedroom that Wilbur believes no stranger could have entered. His wife, Lydia, sees her too, and the locked door turns an unsettling visit into a problem neither can explain. Their lodgings on Twenty-seventh Street become the scene of a mystery that tests Wilbur's confidence in ordinary explanations. When a later event seems to confirm Lydia's fear of a ghostly warning, he begins looking for evidence.

Anna Katharine Green builds this short detective tale from the details of rooms, clothing and remembered encounters. A reversible cloak gives Wilbur one practical lead, while the woman's past draws the story toward questions of money and desperate hope. A quarrel over a valuable bond and a husband's gambling plans adds financial tension to the strange appearance. Readers who enjoy mysteries with an eerie opening can follow the narrator as he weighs appearances against what physical clues might establish.
