About this book
Douglas Cockerell wrote this handbook on bookbinding and the care of books for amateurs, bookbinders and librarians. It carries drawings by Noel Rooke and other illustrations, and a caption names a white pigskin binding made in Basle in 1512. In the editor's preface the aim is stated as trustworthy workshop practice, with design treated as part of good workmanship.
One historical passage says that at the end of the eighteenth century leather began to be pared very thin, and hollow backs and false bands became common. It quotes a Society of Arts committee report that lists five causes of early decay in bindings, among them too few and too thin cords, hollow backs, weak headbands and over-wet leather. Another passage names the essentials of a good binding: sound sewing, slips firmly attached to the boards and fairly thick leather. Elsewhere, definitions cover terms such as bands, band nippers, beating stone and blind tooling.
