About this book
Kate Heintz Watson's Textiles and Clothing dates from 1907. The text covers the history of making cloth: the distaff and spindle, the small spinning wheel, a Syrian spinner who sits on the floor, and the flax wheel worked by a treadle, which the book says was invented in the early sixteenth century. Weaving is explained through the heddle, and captions name a Pueblo woman, a Navajo belt weaver and a Zuni woman at work.
Elsewhere the book teaches needlework. It describes working the purl stitch along the edge of a buttonhole, spacing the stitches about a needle's width apart, and staying or barring a buttonhole with twist or cord, as tailors do. Numbered questions ask readers to make a colour card of contrasting and harmonizing colours, to design ornament for a neck or sleeve, and to say which materials suit infants' garments.
