About this book
Books and Bookmen is a book by Andrew Lang. Lines addressed to the Viscountess Wolseley speak of gossip of texts and bindings old, of faded type, and tarnish’d gold. The text says the modern pirate dresses you in rags, prints you murderously, and binds you, if he binds you at all, in some hideous example of “cloth extra,” all gilt, like archaic gingerbread.
Mr. Samuel Ireland is described as a gentleman extremely fond of old literature and old books. The text says the whole story of young Ireland’s forgeries is not only too long to be told here, but forms the topic of a novel by Mr. James Payn. M. Paul Lacroix supposes that a copy of the first edition, a beautiful example, was offered to the Queen-Mother by Molière himself.
