About this book
The Commonplace Book of James Boswell comes with a memoir and annotations. A section headed UXORIANA records a man saying that when he was warm, telling of his own consequence and generosity, his wife made some cool humbling remarks upon him. The wife is also shown recommending the Arabian Nights Entertainments to one in bad health and low spirits, to keep out disturbing thoughts.
A letter signed Sam. Johnson tells its recipient I hold you, as Hamlet has it, in my heart of hearts. The book says Boswell informed Mr. Temple that since his return from England his reading had been confined to some small treatises on midwifery. An entry dated London, April and May, 1778, has the writer recall that General Paoli one day asked him to read something good out of his journal.
