About this book
Dr. Johnson and His Circle is a book by John Cann Bailey. The contents list names chapters on Johnson as a national institution, the genius of Boswell and the friends of Johnson, among others. One section asks what in Johnson's public work gave him what neither Pope nor Gray ever received, the homage of a nation.
The text says George III never affected to be anything but a plain man, was very honest according to his lights, and never for an instant failed to have the courage of his convictions. A tavern chair is praised as the throne of human felicity, better indeed, because freer, than anything to be found at a private house. The text names the saintly John Wesley and the very far from saintly Topham Beauclerk as a curious pair who both loved and honoured Johnson all their lives.
