About this book
In the Name of the Bodleian, and Other Essays is by Augustine Birrell. The contents list names, among others, Bookworms, Confirmed Readers, First Editions, Gossip in a Library, Librarians at Play, Lawyers at Play, The Non-Jurors and Lord Chesterfield. The front matter carries a line attributed to Lord Shaftesbury that asks for peace to be with the soul of the charitable and courteous author who, for the common benefit of his fellow-authors, introduced the ingenious way of miscellaneous writing.
Duke Humphrey, described as a dissipated and unprincipled fellow, lives in history as "the good Duke Humphrey" because he had the sense to patronize learning, collect manuscripts, and enrich Universities. The Commissioners of 1550 were deputed by King Edward VI. to make an end of the Popish superstition, and under their hands the library totally disappeared.
