About this book

Writing to the women of Great Britain in 1793, Fanny Burney asks for immediate help for French clergy driven from their country. Her short appeal presents their poverty as a public responsibility, urging small, prompt contributions while more lasting support is awaited. An opening apology explains why women, despite restrictions on their public role, can act openly in a cause of compassion.

Burney combines Christian arguments with practical concerns about food, illness and the use of donated money. She praises the displaced priests for following their consciences and warns that admiration means little without material aid. The forceful prose also reveals her alarm at events in revolutionary France. Readers interested in charitable writing, religious exile or women's participation in public life can examine how she makes a case for collective action through both feeling and duty.
