Prayer enters Rosalind Goforth's account through the practical demands of family life and missionary work in China. Writing in the first person, she gathers incidents she regards as answers to requests for help, from money and clothing to illness, travel and decisions about where to work. Her opening explains why she hesitated to publish such private experiences and why she eventually felt obliged to record them. She also answers the objection that asking for ordinary things makes prayer too material.
A later passage follows a riverboat trip toward Honan, during which her husband proposes taking their children into districts with few mission workers. Her fear of disease brings domestic responsibility into conflict with her sense of religious duty. These recollections give the book its particular character: Christian reflection tied to a household under pressure. Readers interested in devotional autobiography can examine how Goforth interprets hardship, small provisions and difficult choices through her faith.
