About this book
British Borneo: Sketches of Brunai, Sarawak, Labuan, and North Borneo is by W. H. Treacher, reprinted from the Journal of the Straits Settlements Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society. The contents list notes, among others, the importance of introducing Chinese into Borneo, the Hakka Chinese settlers, and armed Sikh and Dyak police. Chapter I says that in 1670 Charles II granted to the Hudson's Bay Company a Charter of Incorporation, His Majesty delegating to the Company actual sovereignty over a very large portion of British North America.
One account says that, while the various clauses of the firman were being debated, news arrived that the Rajas had, in the basest manner, let loose the Trusan Muruts on the district the day we had sailed for the Limbang. The book describes it as a fact that the expansion of Britain has been in the main due not to the exertions of its Government so much as to the energy and enterprise of individual citizens.
