About this book
British Museum (Natural History) General Guide is a guide credited to the British Museum. The preface to the thirteenth edition says the Guide is intended for the use of those visitors who wish merely to get a general idea of the arrangements and contents of the Natural History Museum. The preface adds that Special Guides have been published for the use of visitors who wish to make a closer study of the collections.
The text says the three collections were lodged in Montagu House, Bloomsbury, purchased for their reception in 1754, and that the Museum was opened to the public on the 15th of January, 1759. The guide describes a gallery where coloured drawings of a few of the smallest Insects known, namely the Mymaridæ, a group of minute parasitic Hymenoptera, are exhibited, and above is a drawing of a House-Fly. A list of special guides names, among others, Guide to the Whales, Porpoises, and Dolphins (order Cetacea), Guide to the Gallery of Birds and Guide to the Gallery of Fishes.
