About this book
E. S. Russell's Form and Function, subtitled A Contribution to the History of Animal Morphology, was printed in London in 1916 and is illustrated. The preface says it is not a full history. The author points instead to three main currents of morphological thought: the functional or synthetic, the formal or transcendental, and the materialistic or disintegrative.
In one passage he discusses Aristotle's distinction between homogeneous and heterogeneous parts of animals, and notes that Aristotle says the embryo is an animal before it is a particular animal, which he calls a foreshadowing of von Baer's law. Another passage covers Reichert's criticism of other theorists and the separation of morphology from physiology. A further passage describes limbs and feet adapted for digging, swimming, running or life in trees.
