About this book
Saturday stalls beneath the belfry introduce a Bruges filled with household goods, bargaining voices and reminders of its past. George W. T. Omond's illustrated travel account, published in 1906 with paintings by Amédée Forestier, follows the historical associations of West Flanders. His chosen episodes concern Bruges, Ypres, Furnes and Nieuport, while chapters on the coast and dunes extend the view beyond the old towns. From the belfry, red roofs, canals and church towers form a scene that connects the present streets with medieval civic life.
Omond also describes farmhouse interiors, where dark ceiling beams, deep window seats and old stoves remain after dealers have removed much of the antique furniture. He warns visitors about overpriced brassware and records village drinking habits and summer fairs. These everyday observations give readers interested in travel writing a picture of the region as one visitor saw it, with local customs and commercial changes set beside accounts of its history.
